Melbourne Comedy Club
Now in Carlton, I worked most of my time there back at the old location, below the Hilton. It was my first major break in comedy after doing tryout and middle spots for a few years. I did a full season back in 1990. I was raw and my comedy was dangerous. The critics were only lukewarm about my material, but the crowds liked me. I've since realised it's better not to challenge the audiences. They've come out to laugh, so let them. But the room was a great learning curve, back when comedians were still the young lions of the industry. These days, the scene is flooded with young hopefuls. Back then we were a little thinner on the ground, so opportunities to work seasons at the major clubs were a bit easier to get. I'd hate to be trying to get established today without 15 or so years of experience. I've been lucky to get my early years on the comedy stage out of the way in a less competitive environment.
